How to Request a Correction to an Inaccurate Online Article
A correction request works best when it is narrow, documented, and easy for an editor to verify.
Identify the exact statement
Save the article URL, publication date, screenshot, and the sentence that is wrong. Describe the factual error without adding allegations you cannot support. Distinguish an incorrect fact from an opinion or interpretation with which you disagree.
Provide a clear record
Set out the correct fact and attach or offer reliable supporting material. Explain why the difference matters to readers. If the article omits a later development, ask whether an update or editor's note would give the story fair context.
Keep the exchange measured
Send the request through the publication's correction or editorial channel and keep a dated copy. Propose specific wording, but allow the publisher to follow its own policy. After a change, check both the article and how the search result displays it; the two may update at different times.
What a concise request can include
An effective email can name the article and URL, quote the disputed sentence, state the correct fact, attach one reliable source, and request a correction or update. It should provide contact details for verification. Keep a copy of the original text and the correspondence so a later change can be assessed accurately.
Take action
A practical checklist
- Quote one verifiable error instead of describing the whole article as unfair.
- Provide the correct wording and a reliable supporting document or source.
- Name the publication date, headline and exact URL.
- Use the outlet's correction channel and keep a dated copy.
- Recheck the amended page and its search result after the editor responds.
Illustrative example
How this can play out
Suppose an article states that a company opened in 2018 when its registry record shows 2016. A concise request identifies the sentence, attaches the public record and proposes the correct year. A separate claim that the article's tone is hostile is less readily verified and should not obscure the factual error.
This is a hypothetical illustration, not a client case or a claimed FAMA Bureau result.
Questions people ask
Questions and limits
What if the editor disagrees?
Ask which evidence would resolve the specific fact and preserve the exchange. If the dispute involves legal rights, obtain qualified advice for the relevant jurisdiction.
Is an update the same as a correction?
An update adds later information; a correction fixes something wrong in the original account. The article can need one, both or neither.
In brief
A correction is a documented request to amend the record, not a promise that a publisher will remove its reporting.
These guides provide general information. Publisher, platform, search-engine and legal decisions depend on the facts of each matter. Where legal advice is needed, consult a qualified independent professional.
